Common Air Conditioner Problems That Leads To Ac Repairs

Air conditioner problems can be of many types. The most common ones are inadequate cooling levels, complete breakdown, skyrocketing power bills etc. Other problems with existing air conditioner could be a faulty installation, poor servicing, inadequate maintenance, leaky ducts, refrigerant leakage etc. Every air conditioner has particular specification about refrigerant charge. If it is not met, the efficiency of the unit will get impaired. Unqualified service technicians often fail to find refrigerant charging problems or even worsen existing problems by adding refrigerant to a system that is already full. When you detect malfunctions in your air conditioner unit, do not grope for the phone number of the technician immediately. You can do a bit at your own end to troubleshoot the problem. Here we will discuss some common problems of an air conditioner-

• First of all you should check all the relevant fuses and circuit breakers. When you reset a breaker, wait for five minutes. The high pressure limit switch sometimes gets tripped due to too much heat outside. Reset it by pushing the button located in the compressor's access panel.

• Low refrigerant is one of the grave problems of an air conditioner. It generally results due to an undercharged unit during installation. The refrigerant could leak out from the holes in the coils. In case of microscopic leaks it will not help to recharge it as it will again leak out. The leaks should be detected by any of the myriad technical processes and thereby repaired. The unit will only be able to perform at peak efficiency when the refrigerant charge exactly matches the manufacturer's specification. Overcharging will not help either. Refrigerant leaks can also be harmful to the environment, as these contain the harmful CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon) that creates ozone holes.

• We are so busy with our day-to-day chores that we do not have time to take a look at the various electrical appliances operating in the house. One of these is an air conditioner. Filter of an air conditioner requires to be cleaned at regular intervals. They can get clogged with debris and lowers the air flow. This results in inadequate cooling. It also affects the compressor and leads to icing up of the evaporator coils.

• Sometimes we are tempted to buy an oversized unit. Such unit will cycle on and off very frequently. This will lead to rapid wear and tear of the machine. The controls that regulate the compressor and the fan will wear out soon. Oversized unit also leads to high power bills and will remove all moisture from the rooms making them feel dry. Controls can also wear out due to corrosion of wire and terminals.

• Most of us do not care about air conditioner maintenance. As a result it develops small technical problems which snowball into big ones and generate costly repairs. Sometimes the unit go beyond repair and require premature replacement.

• Also check if the batteries of thermostat have run out. An un-working thermostat can cause an array of functional problems for the air conditioner. It should be calibrated properly. The wires form the AC should connect to terminals of the thermostat. There should not be anything guarding the thermostat, say curtains or furniture. Otherwise it will not be able to sample the room air. Sometimes thermostat sensor, located behind the control panel, is knocked out of position. This makes the air conditioner behave erratically. The sensor should be near the coil but not touching it.

• The condensate drain of the air conditioner should be checked regularly to ensure that it is not clogged. A clogged drain will stop the machine to function.
